SEZ Act & Rules of Indian SEZs

SEZ Act & Rules of Indian SEZs

  1. India is emerging as one of the engines of the global economy and a major investment destination. India’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Scheme offers one of the most competitive packages. The challenge today is how to combat the global slowdown without slowing down our economy, and SEZs offer the best platform for generating economic activity and employment to sustain high economic growth.
  2. The Export Promotion Council for EOUs & SEZs (EPCES) was established by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India in 2003. EPCES has been set up to service the export promotional needs of 100% Export Oriented Units (EOUs), Special Economic Zone Units, and Special Economic Zone Developers in India.
  3. EPCES represents the EOU/SEZ Sector, which has approximately 7,000 operational EOUs/SEZ Units and 416 formally approved Special Economic Zones (SEZs) spread across the country. The EOU/SEZ Sector is a major contributor to India’s export basket. Exports from only the SEZ sector in 2019-2020 amounted to US $111 Billion, while EOUs exported US $12 Billion during 2018-19. These units cover major industrial sectors such as textiles, garments & yarn, food & agro products, electronics & software, chemicals, engineering, minerals, and granites. The EOU/SEZ sector provides direct employment to over 2.5 million people in India.
  4. EPCES has published the updated SEZ Act & Rules. This book is highly useful and provides comprehensive information about the rules and regulations related to the setting up of SEZs and SEZ units, benefits, and procedural provisions.
